In this episode of Restless Goa, Chief Editor of The Voice, Vishwanath Nene, speaks with senior journalist Soiru Velip about the burning Chimbel Unity Mall issue and broader matters concerning Goa’s Scheduled Tribe (ST) community.
Velip highlights that the Gawdas, Kunbis, and Velips are the notified ST tribes of Goa – the bhumiputra. He emphasises that the community’s achievements have not come easily, nor have they come freely from the government; and much had to be fought for over time.
While land in Chimbel is currently in the spotlight, Velip points out the irony that crores’ worth of government property lies unused. He adds that Goa, is in fact, the only state in India where no area has been officially notified for the ST community.
Other topics discussed in the episode include land protection, the tribal sub-plan, population data, reservations, the Forest Rights Committee (FRC), the Balli agitation, and an ‘ashram’-cum-resort project.
