Bhurgeanchem Fest 2026 showcases energy, creativity, and learning

The fest aims to promote creativity, skill development, and holistic learning through workshops, cultural events, and community participation

Children are the leaders of tomorrow. Nurturing them from a young age with the right skills ensures they are well-equipped for success. The ‘Bhurgeanchem Fest’ does just that. Hosted by Fr. Agnel High School, Pilar, it brings together young minds for a week of creativity, innovation, and holistic learning, culminating in the vibrant Bhurgeanchem Fest.

Fr Pio Furtado, the principal of the school, shares, “I wanted to create a larger platform for my students. We have been organising various programs in the past, but nothing on this scale.”

Dr Gwendolyn de Ornelas, curator of the fest, expressed her pride in presenting a children’s festival that aims to nurture confidence, creativity, and a sense of belonging among young people. “In a rapidly changing world, it is essential that we create safe, inclusive, and inspiring spaces where children can express themselves freely, learn new skills, and discover their potential. Through these workshops and festival activities, we aim to empower youngsters with knowledge, cultural awareness, and courage them to dream beyond boundaries.”

Though rooted in Pilar, this year the fest expands its reach by inviting surrounding villages such as Goa Velha, Batim, and Agassaim to come together for a fun-filled celebration. “I wanted to unite communities for the common good and break the stress of individualism we see today,” shares Fr Furtado.

A SUMMER OF LEARNING

The four-day workshops leading up to the fest, which culminates on Saturday, 18 April, introduced students to innovative concepts, healthy living, and more. For instance, the Drone Camp conducted by Prof Carmelito Andrade introduced students to cutting-edge drone technology.

The festival also emphasized physical well-being with an energetic Zumba fitness session led by Sheryl Vas, encouraging students to stay active and embrace healthy lifestyles. Complementing this, Sunny D’Souza, a health coach from Parallel Dimensions, delivered an insightful talk on the importance of nutritious food and its impact on overall health and performance.

Following the workshops, students participated in classroom-based sessions tailored to their chosen interests. With guidance from dedicated resource persons and volunteers, participants explored a wide spectrum of activities, including arts, street plays, educational workshops, boxing, football, and more — fostering both skill development and teamwork.

A FEST FOR ALL

The fest begins with a unique 5 am alvorada — a traditional travelling brass band procession through the village. This time, however, it is the young students who will carry the tradition forward by playing the brass instruments. They will be accompanied by ghumot players, a unique addition that has never been done before.

The main fest will feature traditional programs by students from local schools and surrounding villages. Visitors can look forward to delicious food stalls and a variety of activities showcasing the budding talents of the youth.

What to look forward to:

  • Cultural performances featuring Kunbi dance and ghumot

  • Live demonstrations (dhone/kude weaving)

  • Fashion parade, sports displays, and the grand Kotteancho Nach finale

This marks the third edition of the Bhurgeanchem Fest in Goa, following successful editions in Divar and Navelim. “Every festival was open to all and free of cost, ensuring that no child was excluded due to financial barriers. More importantly, these platforms encouraged collaboration — students, teachers, volunteers, and community members came together not just to participate, but to share knowledge and ideas. The focus has always been on empowering young people to take ownership of their environment and become agents of positive change within their communities,” shares festakar Marius Fernandes.
